Thoughts on fandom reactions

  • Jan. 5th, 2010 at 8:07 PM
First of all...I swear that my math teacher must be a client of the Dollhouse, since there's no other reason for one of my classmates to look exactly like Eliza Dushku. And she frakking sounds like her too! The freakiest resemblance ever.

However, that's not what this post is about. It's interesting to watch fandom react to things, the way it focuses on certain issues and ignores others. Not only in broader senses, but in the little things too. Each of these could probably be their own meta, if I had more time and motivation...instead, I just offer them as odd factoids.

1. Helo/Athena are generally accepted as the "nice" couple on BSG. An objection to them as a pairing is incredibly rare, and they usually pop up in fanfic as the cute established pair. Yet between them, these two have: committed treason, threatened assassination to the president, shot each other, shot and killed two innocents to protect their child, committed cold-blooded mutiny against a "friend", pistol-whipped someone for badmouthing the other, and in general been able to disregard everything if it's in the way of their marriage or their child. Not necessarily bad, but definitely not sweet either.

2. This is more a general thing, but whenever you have a male/female team that has one straight-laced character and one break-the-rules character, the relationship is always called sexist. If the male breaks the rules and gets away with it sometimes, while the woman is orderly and tries to keep him in line (even if she is considered right and/or more respected for it), such as Beckett/Castle in Castle, then fandom says "The woman is in charge in name only because the man isn't always put in his place, he has the power by breaking the rules." Yet if the man is orderly, trying to keep a rule-breaking woman in line, and she gets away with it just as often (meaning "not much"), such as the Daniel/Vala relationship in Stargate SG-1, then fandom says "See, they're saying that women need men to be in charge and keep them in line." The situations are exact opposites, and yet both reactions say that the woman is not in power. Odd, I think.

3. There's a lot of criticism of the BSG episodes "The Farm" and "Scar" because of how strongly Kara's feelings for Sam are represented. "It's unrealistic," some sides of fandom say, "She only knew him for a week." And yet, when we find out in "Downloaded" (and even more so in "The Plan") that Sam has been pining in almost the exact same way to the same extreme...fandom doesn't have a word to say. They both fell hard and fast, according to canon—but only one gets picked on for it. Odd, especially considering that the people criticizing Kara are usually not Sam-fans.

4. Stargate fandom likes to rag on Vala for being "immature" and "over the top" based on her style of dress and attitudes towards morality. Even though none of these things are universal, and she's an alien who has no previous experience with Earth culture or mores. Whereas Teal'c, who makes similar social and moral gaffes and is even incredibly racist, is considered awesome and amusing regardless.

5. Admiral Cain executes one of her officers because of mutiny for moral reasons, and is called an evil witch of a commander. Admiral Adama executes one of his officers because of mutiny for moral reasons...and fandom cheers. 'Nough said, right?

6. Some parts of Stargate fandom dislike Seasons 9 and 10 because of the "new" team, and how Cam and Vala are usurpers into the family that SG-1 used to be. Yet when it comes down to it, the only members of SG-1 who don't abandon it at the prospect of a cooler job are...Cam and Vala. Jack goes to Homeworld Security, Daniel tries three times to go to Atlantis, Sam goes to Area 51 and then Atlantis and then her new ship, and Teal'c tries to go back to the Jaffa several times. Cam and Vala are the only ones loyal to the team itself, constantly trying to keep everyone together, and yet a significant portion of fandom considers them usurpers who are breaking the close-knit bonds.

When you wake up, what's the first thing you think about? What's the last thing you think about before you fall asleep? Are they the same?

I honestly wish I could name someone, but I can't.
I think all my fandoms have given me totally high and possibly unrealistic expectations in guys.
Especially with men like Carson, Sheppard, Daniel... they're all so amazing.

Speaking of the former two...  HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAUL AND JOE!
Both amazing, both born on January 5th. Coincedence? Who cares. IT'S FUCKING AWESOME. :)

Mini picspams to celebrate! I really should picspam for everyone's birthday... sorry Shanks and Browder. But hey, those pics were enough to make me forget everything... ;)

Also, happy birthday to my friend Emily for tomorrow! Or today.. since it's like 4 in the morning...

And and I totally rec this Joe picspam on safix's journal. Freaking amazing. Right here!

Oh.. and...
Totally stolen off [info]risti 's journal.
I thought Glee mashups were awesome. Dude, Glee = two songs. This = 25.
This is so damn amazing.

Title: As We Fight For Our Minds
Fandom: Battlestar Galactica/Stargate SG-1 crossover
Rating: PG-13 (alien abduction, violence, PTSD, see warnings)
Warnings: possibly disturbing imagery related to multiple forms of violation, torture (non-graphic)
Length: ~9100 (in two parts)
Characters: Kara, Sam, Goa'uld!Caprica Six/Goa'uld!Leoben, Vala, Bra'tac (slight Kara/Sam beyond friendship)
Setting: Late Season 7-ish for SG-1
Summary: When the Goa'uld come to take Kara as a host, suddenly all Momma's lessons in pain might be worthwhile—but escaping isn't the full victory it seems like it would be, and her fellow escapee may be the only thing keeping her from going mad. AU (reincarnated BSG characters)
Notes: This is the epic and not-so-fluffy plot that came to mind when I saw the "alternate universes" challenge for Day Six of "Twelve Days of Kara/Sam" on [info]pyramidofdreams .

Anyone who hasn't seen BSG could read this, as it takes place entirely in the Stargate universe. On the other hand, for those who haven't seen Stargate, these are the references that are essential to understand if you want to read this story (the others are hopefully non-essential in context): "The Goa'uld" are a worm-like parasitic race of aliens who take over human hosts, trap them in their own minds/bodies, and then pretend to be gods (and not nice ones) so that they can rule over human planets. Their consciousness is not invulnerable to the consciousness of their host, but the experience is almost exclusively overwhelming torture for their human hosts. A "chappa'ai" is the Goa'uld word for stargate, a metal ring that transports you between planets. The "Tau'ri" are the modern-day humans from Earth on the show as they are known to the rest of the galaxy, and are the first to have ever killed a Goa'uld "god". A "zat'nik'tel" is a stun gun.

Fic: L is for Lesson

Title/Prompt: L is for Lesson
Fandom: SG-1
Rating: G
Summary:i>The object of the game is simple. You start with this rock, and see if you can trade it in for something bigger or better.</i>
Wordcount: ~850
Authors Notes: Written for the SG-1 Gen Day Vala Alphabet Soup

One part of what was originally a five-part fic. Life over the holiday season unfortunately got away from me. I will post the rest, but this scene can stand on it's own for the sake of the fest. Huge thanks to [info]sixbeforelunch, [info]hariboo_smirks, and a few other people who responded to my frantic last-minute calls for people to beta this in it's (unfinished) state while I was still trying to complete it. The reality is, though, that this is still pretty rough, and I'll gladly claim any mistakes...

It started with just one small rock. Vala looked at it closely and then held it out towards the midday sun, her eyes widening as the sun glistened off of it's surface.

Vala and the team - picspam

It's SG-1 Gen Fic Day again, and this time there's a special focus on one of my Gate girls, Vala Mal Doran. In honor of her, and the huge place she created in my previously Sam-Daniel-Teal'c-loving heart, I give you this mini picspam. Yes, she had a main connection with Daniel, but I have so many favorite moments where Vala is interacting with everyone on the team in heartwarming ways. She's not just morally grey and sexually unrepressed, after all (even though we love her for that too). Here are just a top few:
